I started
dancing in 2002 as a gift for my niece , who was graduating and it
would be her last year of competition dancing for MGM Dance Studio. I had never taken a dance class in my life. What was I thinking? I
did a duo lyrical dance with her, and I fell in love with dancing! From 2002 to present, I’ve taken different forms of dances
including Hip Hop, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern, Tap, Lyrical, House
Dancing, Breaking, Ballet, Swing, Ballroom, African, and different
forms of Middle Eastern dances. I’ve
been a member of an adult competition group, Starlites, at MGM Dance
Studio since 2004. I’ve received many awards from competitions in duos, trios,
and group.
I would have to say that my favorite dance form is belly
dancing. It is so much
fun and what a wonderful workout! The thing that I love the most about belly dancing is that
anyone can do it. Unlike
most dance forms, where you are considered too old after a certain
age, belly dancing can be done well into your 70’s! Belly dancing also doesn’t require a certain body type to be
able to do it. The original belly dancers were much larger in size than what
we see today, especially on dance videos. I’m more curvaceous than my fellow troupe members, but I’m
very flexible and can do some moves that some of them cannot. I would like to show that being bigger can be just as
beautiful and mesmerizing! When
I dance, I feel free and have so much fun doing it. I would love to share my passion of dancing with others as well
as educating them on the culture of belly dancing. |
